Preserving and Enhancing Access to Historic Oxfordshire
Records of Archaeological Work held by the Ashmolean Museum

Project Description

1. Recording and Preserving the Archives

2. Enhancing the Archive

3. Developing Internet Access to the Archive

1. Recording and Preserving the Archives

This project involved listing the contents of each of five collections of archival material to international standards. A database was created to index the archives and record the information contained within each document.

All the material in the archives have been microfilmed, whilst the original archives have been conserved and systematically ordered for long-term storage. The microfilm archive master is held by the Bodleian Library, and diazo copies of the archive are held by the Ashmolean Museum and Oxfordshire County Record Office.

Basic information about the archives and a searchable version of the database are available on this website (Historic Oxfordshire).

The information from this archive has been integrated into Oxfordshire's Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) where information is available for use in the screening of planning applications and for local history and other research.

2. Enhancing the Archive — Ashmolean Museum & Oxfordshire Site and Monuments Record

The archive database has been enhanced with:
  • Additional information concerning archaeological objects mentioned in the documents. Many of these objects were deposited with the Ashmolean at the same time as the documents.
  • Additional archaeological, historical information and geographical information.
  • Images of sites and archaeological finds, combined with added historical and topographical information.

3. Developing Internet Access to the Archive

This website has been developed as an information and learning resource in order to enhance public access to the archives through use of the Internet.

Basic information about the archives and a searchable version of the database are available on this website.

There are also pages giving information on over 60 sites and places across Oxfordshire that are mentioned in the archives. On these pages you can:
  • find out about the history of these sites,
  • see photographs of objects found at the sites,
  • see historic and current photographs of the sites,
  • see aerial photographs taken by Major G.W.G Allen.

This website now provides an informative and engaging asset for educational and recreational use.
